AI insurance book set to close on 1st September
Published on : 13 Aug 2025
Given the recent increase in Avian flu cases – five in both June and July and four to date in August - a timely reminder to our members that if they are interested in obtaining an insurance quotation for cover, they need to contact their local NFU Mutual Agent before the book for new business closes on 1 September (subject to outbreaks). Whilst the acceptance criteria – being a Lion Code of Practice registered site – will mean that some of our members regrettably are unable to obtain a quote, for those members that are Lion registered we encourage them to make contact as a matter of some urgency. We have spoken to the NFU Mutual and have asked that they review their acceptance criteria and understand that they will look at this for next year. This does mean that some of our members are left with no insurance options this year - something that we will be working hard to change for next yearWe are aware that premiums have increased since last year however, we understand that this is a reflection of the increase in margin/value at risk and not the rate charged, which remains unchanged.Gary Ford, Head of Strategy and Producer Engagement at BFREPA, stated, “The current Avian Flu situation is a concern as we head toward the start of the migration season. The fourteen cases over the summer has led some to suggest that the forthcoming 2025/26 season will be as challenging as the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons. Against this context we urge our members, who are interested, to make contact with their local NFU Mutual Agent in order to obtain terms. A welcome feature of the cover is that it is broken down into several sections which will allow members to fully consider their options and what is important to them and their business. It is regrettable that not all of our members will be eligible for a quote and we have raised our concerns regarding this with the NFU Mutual”. Adam Williams, NFU Mutual’s Animal Disease Portfolio Manager, added, “To maintain the sustainability of our AI insurance offering, we reopened general new business for the first time in three years last April. As we look ahead, we encourage farmers to act swiftly before the upcoming season closes on the 1st of September 2025, allowing them to secure essential coverage during this high-risk period.” Farmers are urged to engage with NFU Mutual representatives to discuss their individual insurance needs and explore tailored solutions. We are here to support all of our members and BFREPA offer an exceptional service to members to discuss and follow outbreaks through its Whatsapp channels with more than 600 egg producers registered. BFREPA also have a website with help and information about dealing with the challenges of AI, as well as an outbreak section which gives clarity to the changing landscape.
