Depletion in sight? Get your carbon right!
Carbon Assessment
Measure Your Carbon Footprint and Make a Difference
BFREPA have partnered with Alltech to provide each of our producer members with one free bronze carbon footprinting package per year as a benefit of your BFREPA membership.
Understanding your environmental impact is the important first step towards producing eggs more sustainably. The Alltech E-CO2 Carbon Assessment is designed to help you measure your business carbon footprint. By making informed choices, you can contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations.
What is a Carbon Footprint?
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases—including carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane - that are generated by our actions. These emissions are typically measured in tonnes (or kilograms) of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).
How Does the Carbon Assessment Work?
The Carbon Assessment estimates your carbon emissions based on a range of inputs, including:
- Flock details: Housed and depletion dates, hen weight, egg numbers, and housing system
- Feed Use: feed totals including ration types, ration ingredients, and inclusions where possible
- Resources: including manure export, bedding, and disinfectants
- Consumables: Electricity, fuel and water, renewable energy, transport
By entering details in each section, you’ll receive an estimate of your annual carbon emissions and suggestions for reducing your impact.
Why Should You Calculate Your Carbon Footprint?
Not only is measuring your carbon footprint now a requirement for Lion Code certification but it is crucial for several reasons:
- Awareness: Understand which of your activities have the greatest environmental impact
- Action: Discover effective steps to reduce your emissions
- Responsibility: Be part of the global movement towards sustainability and climate action
- Cost Savings: Many carbon-cutting actions also save money, such as improving home efficiency or reducing waste
Carbon Footprinting Package Options
Only the bronze option is offered as free membership benefit for one flock per year to BFREPA producer members, however BFREPA have partnered with Alltech to also provide discounted options for those members who want to know and understand more about their carbon footprint or receive a more personalised service with Alltech.

Your Results
Once you’ve completed all sections, the information is received by Alltech who analyse the data. You’ll receive a carbon footprinting report from Alltech focused on your flock which meets the requirements of the Lion Code. The report will include the carbon footprint result for the flock and a comparative system type average which will provide benchmarking information for your flock. Silver and gold packages offer a more detailed bespoke report for your flock.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is my data private? Yes, information is completely confidential. The data is anonymised and collated to assist with benchmarking.
- I don’t have exact figures. Can I still use the calculator? Absolutely. Estimates are acceptable, however the more accurate the data that's entered, the better the results will be.
- What is CO2e? It stands for “carbon dioxide equivalent,” a measurement that accounts for the global warming potential of different greenhouse gases.
- I have more than one flock, how much will it cost for my other flocks? You can submit data for additional flocks, however only one flock per year is included in your membership. Additional flocks will be subject to a discounted fee to BFREPA producer members of £95 plus VAT
